Day 3 - West Texas

We started day 3 pretty slowly.  Jen slept in a little, I drank coffee and Erin played with a friend she made yesterday.  Once we got up and moving, it was time to pack up and head west.  We had more people stop by to see Daisy.  That is the name Jen has given the Shasta.  I think it's a good choice.

This picture is from the beginning of the trip, but I just got it on my ipad, so I thought I would share.

This is the first time we have been farther west than South Llano State Park.  We knew the land was rough, but it's still shocking driving though this part of the state for the first time.  Talk about rough country!  I can only imagine how it was for people crossing this country years ago, before air conditioning.

See anything wrong with this picture?  Not sure what happened to that pole, but I couldn't pass up the photo op!

We also encountered a truck hauling a BIG helicopter.  When it passed us, the right skid of the helicopter was scraping the ground, and one of the back trailer tires was blow and running on just the rim.  He pulled over just after I took this picture.  You can see it leaning.  Scary stuff.

We got into Balmorhea State Park about 5pm, and Erin and I threw on our suits and went swimming.  This park has a natural spring that has been made into a pool.  The water is clear....and cold!  While the pool is nice, we are less than thrilled with the park, so we may be heading out tomorrow.  Pics to come shortly!

Also...the trailer lights worked great today!  So, hopefully, that problem is solved.

  1. The park is not the best but we love the pool! Tyler likes to dive to the bottom and catch the turtles! If you're staying make sure you go out to the McDonald Observatory!! Go in the evening. Also check out the Marfa Lights. It's a drive out there but pretty cool to see! We also toured the Fort and surprisingly the kids enjoyed it :). Have a great time!

  2. We loved the pool, but decided to leave a day early. As it turned out, the park was crazy because it was the 4th. So, we headed west. Have you been to Rockhound?
